ABOUT tonyince.com
I am an indirect tax tragic and this page was set up to share my thoughts on various issues about Australian indirect tax that are interesting (or more frighteningly, fascinating) to me. Perhaps you might also enjoy them.

A bit about me. My name is Tony Ince (haven’t yet changed to tonyince.com although the kids reckon .com is a great surname). I started my tax career in the Australian Taxation Office, moved to the Sales Tax section (remember that?) then moved to what is now Ernst & Young as manager indirect tax in their Perth office. Partaking in the tax training session with some very bright tax people piqued my interest in the detail that is tax consulting.
From there I moved to a specialist indirect tax practice in Perth, Fehily Loaring, where the minutiae of indirect tax research was continued. I was a partner at Fehily Loaring until 2006 when Jim Loaring decided that golf and fishing were more interesting than me. We still catch up, and golf and fishing are still more interesting than me, although if you want any advice on the R & D tax concession, he is all over it – his cross to bear.
I moved to PKF in Perth as Director, indirect tax, where my fascination with tax issues continued. More recently I have had roles with Deloitte in Perth, RSM and currently consult to Moore Australia nationally. In all these roles, the sometimes quirky or way out interpretations of indirect tax issues by some very smart people continue to fascinate me. I love the way they think outside the box (sorry for the cliché but it seems to fit); lateral thinking about tax issues based on a very solid technical foundation is what I continue to strive for.
WHY MOSTYN CONSULTING?
When I set up on my own, I was put under pressure to come up with a company name. What’s in a name, I thought, so picked my late father’s middle name (yes, Mostyn). He never really liked it but I did – noice, different. It is apparently of Welsh origin, but I’m not quiet sure why as neither my grandmother (who chose the name) or my grandfather had any Welsh origins as far as I can tell.
MY SPECIALTIES
GST (no, it is not just 10% as I hope some of my blogs will demonstrate)
Payroll tax (one of the ugly step sisters of state tax, and one that many businesses underestimate)
Fuel Tax Credits (if you use fuel in your business, contact me and I will review on an obligation free basis. No refund, no charge. Most businesses are under-claiming or missing out altogether)
Employee/contractor issues (as well as payroll tax, the classification of workers as employees or contractors affects Super Guarantee Charge, Workers Comp and PAYG liabilities)
Duty (formerly Stamp Duty, the second ugly step sister of state tax)
Land Tax (the third ugly step sister of state tax)
Enhanced Project By-Law Scheme (the EPBS; if you don’t know what it is, you probably don’t need it. It used to provide across the board customs concessions for large projects but has since been canned)
Anything else!! If it’s a tax or concession, I am almost certainly aware of it. If I can’t help you out, I am sure to know someone who can.
